Music: Broken by lovelytheband

MUSIC is a segment that features a song that’s caught my brain. Some new to me, some known to me, all brilliant.

As per my standard, I’m late to the party. Apparently, Broken was quite the hit (played on the hour by the hour) in 2017 and I missed out on all the fanfare but I’m hearing it (and loving it) now. What’s old to you may well be new to others but it’s the discovery that ultimately matters. [I find it rather mind blowing when I meet someone who has never heard, Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen (in this, I believe, I have more reason to be shocked but that’s probably me being a snob) and yet it happens.]

Broken is more than meeting someone “broken,” I find this to be a common point of contention about the song. It’s more to do with recognizing the realness in someone else. Someone who doesn’t falsely display their pieces as a whole but rather a collection of where they’ve been and what they’ve been through. A summary greater than its parts. Him: disoriented, influenced, unsure. Her: obnoxious, colorful, forthcoming. You find comfort in the realness of flaws, not the display of them.

Also, I like this song because I actually hear the sound of casual happenstance in meeting someone new and seeing something that isn’t so readily apparent in everyone else. The spark. Lightning in a bottle. A simple song that doesn’t overly glorify an equally simple but special experience.

I can count on one hand where, had Broken been a song in my past at all, it would have kicked off in my head during those chance encounters. It’s lovely when a song can provoke memories that were never attached to them in the first place. How does that happen.

Lyrics, Broken (provided by Genius) by lovelytheband. Album, finding it hard to smile.

[Chorus]
I like that you’re broken
Broken like me
Maybe that makes me a fool
I like that you’re lonely
Lonely like me
I could be lonely with you

[Verse 1]
I met you late night, at a party
Some trust fund baby’s Brooklyn loft
By the bathroom, you said let’s talk
But my confidence is wearing off

[Pre-Chorus]
These aren’t my people
These aren’t my friends
She grabbed my face and
That’s when she said

[Chorus]
I like that you’re broken
Broken like me
Maybe that makes me a fool
I like that you’re lonely
Lonely like me
I could be lonely with you

[Verse 2]
There’s something tragic, but almost pure
Think I could love you, but I’m not sure
There’s something wholesome, there’s something sweet
Tucked in your eyes that I’d love to meet

[Pre-Chorus]
These aren’t my people
These aren’t my friends
She grabbed my face and
That’s when she said

[Chorus]
I like that you’re broken
Broken like me
Maybe that makes me a fool
I like that you’re lonely
Lonely like me
I could be lonely with you

[Bridge]
Life is not a love song that we like
We’re all broken pieces floating by
Life is not a love song we can try
To fix our broken pieces one at a time

[Chorus]
I like that you’re broken
Broken like me
Maybe that makes me a fool
I like that you’re lonely
Lonely like me
I could be lonely with you
I like that you’re broken
Broken like me
Maybe that makes me a fool
I like that you’re lonely
Lonely like me
I could be lonely with you
