MUSIC is a segment that features a song that’s caught my brain. Some new to me, some known to me, all brilliant.
Everyday is an onslaught of words and I’m fine with that. But it does pay to occasionally stop and enjoy the silence. “Enjoy The Silence” is in no way new to me; a precious song in my musical armoire. My morning walk inspired today’s selection.
Lyrics (provided by Genius) Enjoy The Silence by Depeche Mode. Album, Violator.
[Verse 1]
Words like violence break the silence
Come crashing in into my little world
Painful to me, pierce right through me
Can’t you understand? Oh, my little girl
[Chorus]
All I ever wanted
All I ever needed is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm
[Interlude]
[Verse 2]
Vows are spoken to be broken
Feelings are intense, words are trivial
Pleasures remain, so does the pain
Words are meaningless and forgettable
[Chorus]
All I ever wanted
All I ever needed is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm
[Interlude]
[Chorus]
All I ever wanted
All I ever needed is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm
All I ever wanted
All I ever needed is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm
[Interlude]
[Outro]
Enjoy the silence

Goodness, how did I only just notice this post? I love Depeche Mode, I even ummed and arred about buying a ‘Violator’ T-shirt, then shrugged it off and bought one anyway! I think “Personal Jesus” is my favourite song on this album, though I have to admit, I love the Marilyn Manson version even more. “In Your Room” or “Soothe My Soul” is probably my favourite Depeche Mode song overall, or maybe “Corrupt” from Sounds Of The Universe? There are too many great choices and so much of it depends on my mood! I can still remember the time I went to a 80’s nightclub and I asked the DJ to play some Depeche Mode, he refused and said that Depeche Mode are a bit “bleurgh”. What gives?!

“Bleurgh?” What kind of crap DJ was that!? Omg, I’m embarrassed for him. You know what’s interesting? I find that Manson (and I mean this with no disrespect) makes far better remakes than originals. His version of Tainted Love is phenomenal, Personal Jesus is also excellent. When Manson does a remake, I just know it’s going to be excellent instead of some half-assed, watered down version. I have a certain respect for Policy Of Truth, a lot more in touch with the human existence as opposed to far reaching common ideals, often repackaged in music. Art is meant to be challenging, not easily digestible. Depeche Mode always grasped that, I think.

I have to admit, I very nearly left the club there and then and I’ve never requested a song or artist since. It just made me feel like I don’t have good tastes in music. Oh yes, Manson just takes something that’s almost electro pop and just adds what I can only call liquid sex appeal. It’s darker, it’s more controversial but it is always, always good. I can remember watching an interview with Depeche Mode and they talked a lot about challenging expectations. “Strangelove” is another great example. It’s often associated with Pride events (because LGBTQ+ love is “strange” to some people) but it’s actually about the fact that in relationships it’s not all plain sailing, you have highs and lows and hence, it’s strange. I love that as well as these hidden meanings, Depeche Mode also deliver it with a sort of calm and strong energy. It’s not angry music, you really have to look for the message.

I remember this track well, though that year (1990) I don’t look back on with any fondness at all. For me, the most memorable segment from this track is from 0:18-0:34. Such a moving arrangement. Thank you for sharing.
