MUSIC: “Zero,” by Smashing Pumpkins

MUSIC is a segment that features a song that’s caught my brain. Some new to me, some known to me, all brilliant.

Someone asked me the coolest question the other day, “Do you have a dark-love playlist?” And my immediate response, “oh my god, no I don’t,” which I immediately followed up with, “why don’t I have that playlist?” I like the idea of it, it just sounds cool. Regardless of how that playlist turns out, I know the first song on it (hands down) to be “Zero,” by Smashing Pumpkins from their stellar album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.

Lyrics (provided by Genius) “Zero,” by Smashing Pumpkins. Album: Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness

[Verse 1]
My reflection, dirty mirror
There’s no connection to myself
I’m your lover, I’m your zero
I’m the face in your dreams of glass
So save your prayers
For when we’re really gonna need ’em
Throw out your cares and fly
Wanna go for a ride?

[Chorus]
She’s the one for me
She’s all I really need (oh yeah)
She’s the one for me

[Break]
Emptiness is loneliness
And loneliness is cleanliness
And cleanliness is godliness
And God is empty just like me

[Verse 2]
Intoxicated with the madness
I’m in love with my sadness
Bullshit fakers, enchanted kingdoms
The fashion victims chew their charcoal teeth
I never let on that I was on a sinking ship
I never let on that I was down

[Bridge]
You blame yourself
For what you can’t ignore
You blame yourself for wanting more

[Chorus]
She’s the one for me
She’s all I really need
She’s the one for me
She’s my one and only
